Legendary circular hike from Ehrenburg/Casteldarne) via Kienberg to Montal/Mantana, featuring beautiful panoramic views, historic paths and traces of local traditions.

The varied circular hike on Kienberg combines impressive natural scenery with local legends and historical sites. Starting in Ehrenburg/Casteldarne, the Kienberg Trail leads through forests, meadows and traditional rural landscapes towards Montal/Mantana. Rising like an island above the Puster Valley, Kienberg owes its distinctive shape to geological processes dating back to the formation of the Alps.

Along the route, hikers encounter traces of local folklore and centuries-old traditions. One of the best-known legends is linked to Plattnerhof, which the trail passes along the way. According to local tradition, a hard-hearted farmer once turned away a hungry beggar, who then placed a curse on Kienberg. This story adds a unique cultural dimension to the hike and enriches the experience for visitors of all ages.

At 1,222 m, the trail reaches the highest point of Kienberg. From here, beautiful views open across the Puster Valley, the surrounding villages and the mountains of the region. The broad ridge provides an ideal place to pause and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings.

After a break in Montal/Mantana, the return route follows the historic Way of the Cross back to Ehrenburg/Casteldarne. Several stations along the trail reflect the area's long pilgrimage tradition. For centuries, pilgrims have visited the “Kornmutter” shrine to pray for favourable weather and blessings for their homes, farms and harvests.

The combination of panoramic views, legendary places, historic paths and varied landscapes makes the Kienberg hike a rewarding experience for anyone interested in nature, culture and local heritage.
