The Butterfly Trail in St. Sigmund/San Sigismondo combines nature, culture and fascinating local legends in a varied hiking experience. The route leads through the sunny slopes between St. Sigmund/San Sigismondo and Terenten/Terento, where flower-rich meadows, fragrant forests and natural vegetation provide an ideal habitat for many butterfly species. Along the themed trail, informative panels offer interesting insights into the world of butterflies, while creatively designed benches invite visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
The starting point itself is home to one of South Tyrol’s most remarkable Gothic monuments: the parish church of St. Sigmund/San Sigismondo. First mentioned in historical records in 1363, the present church was built between 1449 and 1489. Its high altar, dating from 1440, is considered one of the oldest and most important winged altars in South Tyrol.
Further along the trail, hikers encounter impressive witnesses of natural history. The large glacial boulders, known as the “Giants of Ehrenburg”, were transported into the valley by glaciers during the Ice Age. According to local legend, the giants destroyed the nearby Guggenschlössl castle by throwing huge stone spheres at it. Today, the castle ruins still recall this legendary tale.
Passing the Schiffereggerhof farm, the trail eventually returns to the starting point in St. Sigmund/San Sigismondo. The combination of butterfly-themed information, cultural landmarks, geological highlights and local legends makes this hike a rewarding experience for the whole family.
