Walk into history
More than 2000 years ago, the Puster Valley was under the administrative authority of Rome. Even today, parts of Ehrenburg and the nearby settlement area of St. Lorenzen bear witness to the early history of the province of Noricum, which was once part of the Great Celtic Empire.
An attractive and pleasant circular hike between the southern town center of Kiens and the western landscape area of Ehrenburg offers insights into the history of the Romans. At various experience and rest spots, the importance of traveling and the role of rest stations around Kiens are presented in an exciting way to bring the past to life.
One of the best-preserved milestones from Roman times is a column about two meters high made of quartz phyllite. The Roman stone was erected under the reign of the Roman Emperor Lucius Septinius Severus and shows the distance to the more easterly Roman city of Aguntum near Lienz in East Tyrol.
Also worth seeing (only from outside) is the historic Ehrenburg castle complex, built in 1250, and the nearby baroque parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt. A special charm is also given by the beautiful wooden fences and the old dry stone walls in Ehrenburg. Places to eat: Gasthof Obermair in Ehrenburg, Riverhotel Post in Kiens.
