The hike from Kiens/Chienes to Schöneck Castle and Issing Weiher/Laghetto d’Issengo combines impressive natural scenery with historical landmarks, local craftsmanship and cultural heritage. The tour starts in the village centre of Kiens/Chienes and initially follows the Grünbach stream towards Schöneck Castle.
Passing through the narrow Grünbach gorge, hikers reach one of the region’s most remarkable sights. Schöneck Castle stands proudly on a rocky outcrop and offers beautiful views over the Puster Valley. Nearby grows the rare “Legefichte”, a protected natural monument and a unique botanical attraction.
From the castle hill, the route continues along a historic path to the Gothic chapel of Haselried. According to local tradition, a sacred spring once existed here and was visited by pilgrims seeking relief from eye ailments. The trail then leads via Irenberg to the idyllic Issing Pond, a small natural lake surrounded by meadows and forests that invites visitors to relax and enjoy the peaceful setting.
Next to the pond lies the Bergila herb garden, home to a wide variety of medicinal and aromatic plants. Just a short distance away, the traditional mountain pine oil distillery offers fascinating insights into the production of regional natural products.
Several refreshment stops can be found along the route. Gasthof Schöneck, Seegasthaus Issing Pond and Gasthof Irenberg invite hikers to enjoy regional specialties in a welcoming atmosphere.
The return route leads back to Kiens/Chienes through a varied landscape rich in natural and cultural attractions. Starting from the centre of Kiens/Chienes, follow trail no. 1 along the Grünbach stream towards Schöneck Castle. The route passes through the impressive Grünbach Gorge and climbs steadily on forest and meadow paths. Shortly before reaching the castle, hikers pass the rare Legefichte, a protected natural monument. Following trail no. 3, the route continues to Schöneck Castle and the Gothic chapel of Haselried.
Above Haselried, the hike follows the historic Pfaffensteig and then continues along the panoramic trail. Via the old Issing road, the route follows trail marker no. 7 towards Pfalzen/Falzes. Beautiful views of the Puster Valley and the surrounding rural landscape accompany this section.
Passing through Pfalzen/Falzes, the trail continues to the sports area. From there, follow trail marker no. 6B towards Irenberg and then trail marker no. 6 to Issinger Weiher. This idyllic natural lake is an ideal place for a relaxing break. Nearby are the Seegasthaus Issinger Weiher, the Bergila herb garden, and the traditional mountain pine oil distillery.
For the return journey, follow trail no. 1 back towards Kiens/Chienes.
Along the route, Gasthof Schöneck, Gasthof Irenberg, and Seegasthaus Issinger Weiher offer excellent opportunities to enjoy regional specialties and refreshments.
The hike follows mainly easy to moderately difficult hiking, forest and meadow paths without any technical challenges, making it ideal for nature lovers, culture enthusiasts and leisure hikers.
The hike is easily accessible by public transport. Take the train to Ehrenburg/Casteldarne railway station. From there, continue by village bus no. 423 or, during the summer months, by hiking bus no. 426 to Kiens/Chienes or Issing/Issengo. Alternatively, Kiens/Chienes can be reached directly by bus line 401, which connects Bruneck/Brunico, Kiens/Chienes and Brixen/Bressanone.
